One of the best gifts that you can give anyone for the holidays is a book. No matter how old you are, books are healthy for your mental health, increase your vocabulary, and take you to faraway places while you remain cuddled up in a blanket with a cup of tea. And they don’t require batteries, cords, or Wi-Fi (unless if you are reading from a tablet, but in this case, we are referring to good old-fashion bound books) While we enjoy shopping for books on Amazon (and may have gone overboard a time or two), we love supporting local bookstores, and Pittsburgh has lots of them! Here are two of our favorites!

White Whale Bookstore

This bookstore’s name was inspired by Herman Melville’s classic Moby Dick, and features a wide selection of new and used books from a variety of genres—including classic literature, poetry, and more! Local authors and works from independent publishers are also sold here. Additionally, the White Whale frequently hosts events like book clubs, author readings, and poetry nights. Are you or one of your favorite people a collector of books? The Caliban Book Shop offers an abundance of used and rare books! Shop frequently because the titles are always changing and you never know, you may just find that first edition of your favorite book that you have been hunting for!
