Summertime Driving Safety and Health Tips

Summer is now officially here! While most people have been in summer mode for the last month or so, there is still plenty of time to get out and enjoy all of those summertime activities like car shows, camping, and fishing. But just because the snow is gone doesn’t mean that we should be less cautious. In fact, some sources indicate that more fatal auto accidents happen in the summer months. So how can you stay safe on the road this summer? Here are a few summertime driving safety and health tips from Baierl Toyota.

Severe Thunderstorm with LightningWatch the Daily Forecast

In this day and age, we have places that we need to get to no matter if there rain or shine. However, we still recommend checking the daily weather forecast and be prepared with appropriate supplies or change your driving style if need be. For sunny days, keep a pair of sunglasses handy. And don’t forget the sunscreen (this is coming from someone who was sunburned after driving for half an hour)! When you encounter rain, remember to take it easy and slow down. If you happen to get caught in a nasty thunderstorm or area where tornadoes are possible, try to assess the system’s behavior before continuing on your way. And if need be, try to find appropriate shelter.

Don’t Leave Anyone in the Sitting Vehicle

If you decide to bring the kids or pets along on your adventures, never leave them in the vehicle, even if it is only for a few minutes to run into the grocery store. It only takes a few minutes for your vehicle’s interior temperature to rise by more than 20 degrees. Always make sure that everyone comes with you.

Be More Aware of Your Surroundings

This piece of advice is crucial no matter the season, but in the summer, you will be sharing the roads and streets with more motorcycles, bicycles, pedestrians, and farm equipment. Give them plenty of space and only pass them when it is safe and legal to do so.

Mind Your Medications

Summer is allergy season! If you are taking any type of medication, no matter what it is for, make sure you know how your body responds to it before getting behind the wheel. We also recommend cleaning or replacing your vehicle’s air filters to help reduce your exposure to allergens while you are driving.

Stay Hydrated!

And last, but certainly not least, one of the most important tips we can give is to drink lots of water while you are on the road. Like we mentioned, your vehicle’s interior temperature can be up to 20 degrees warmer than it is outside. Even if you have your A/C cranked up to full blast, your body is still losing water. Make sure to bring along a bunch of water bottles for the ride!

Have a Fun and Safe Summer!
