It may be worth first looking at the different Corolla trim levels before we dive into specifics about the XSE and XLE. In terms of price, and excluding the hybrid, the trim levels on the 2020 Corolla start with the L and go up from there with the LE, SE, XLE, and XSE.  However, it is almost like there are two separate lineups.

You have the L lineup and the SE lineup with the L, LE, XLE and the SE and XSE respectively. For this reason, there are actually a lot of differences between the XLE and XSE even though they are relatively close in terms of price. This is actually how a lot of trim level lineups work from Toyota including the Camry.

One of the largest differences between these two models comes down to what’s under the hood. The XLE gets the same 1.8-liter engine as the L and LE with 139 horsepower and 126 pound-feet of torque. In the XLE this engine gets up to 29-city mpg and 37-highway mpg.

The XSE, like the SE, goes bigger under the hood with a 2.0-liter engine that’s good for 169 horsepower and 151 pound-feet of torque. This engine actually manages to produce better efficiency than the XLE with 31-city mpg and 38-highway mpg.

You can tell these two models apart on the outside quite easily. The XSE features a sport mesh grille, a chrome-tipped dual exhaust, and gray metallic side rocker panels. The biggest difference though is the inclusion of 18-inch wheels over the 16-inch wheels on the XSE. On the inside, the biggest difference is the added paddle shifters on the XSE.
